HEY, NERDS!

What’s wrong with being a nerd? Being a nerd means you’re really into something specific - you have a piece of media or an activity that gets you really excited, you know everything about it, and you’re always seeking out ways to interact with it. So if you’re calling me a nerd, you’re calling me… passionate? Knowledgeable? Dedicated? Why would that ever be a derogatory thing?

So yeah, I’m Caroline - nerd, writer, creator, human. Nice to meet you.

I’ve been writing my whole life. My mom still has a story I wrote in the fourth grade about aliens sending mind-control cereal to Earth to infiltrate humankind that she’s saved all these years, because she knew in that moment, I was meant to be a writer. My endeavors have ranged far and wide since then: musical theatre and drama in high school, literary analysis and screenwriting culminating in my English degree in college, moonlighting as an NCAA sports journalist during my post-college years in Florida, and now writing and producing podcasts and tabletop roleplay game content as a married, semi-functional adult.

After all these years and adventures, I feel I’ve dug into enough different aspects of the industry and developed a broad enough skillset that I’m ready to commit to making writing my career. Whether that’s in a full-time role supporting athletic communications, writing creatively in a tabletop gaming environment, creating and producing podcasts, or something else entirely, I’m finding that dream come true.

MY WRITING JOURNEY

  • College

In college, I spent most of my time on literary analysis, researching patterns within specific works and through the ages, capped off by a thesis on The Odyssey and attempts to adapt epics to animation.

I also sought every opportunity to write creatively, whether through formal Creative Writing classes, participating in NaNoWriMo, or my final senior-level intensive where I wrote a television pilot screenplay.

  • Freelancer

In my post-college years, I moved to Florida and quickly dove into the world of college gymnastics, joining College Gym News on a close-knit remote team covering 80+ teams across the country on social media and our blog. I immersed myself in the journalistic style, learning interview techniques, research skills, and technical aspects of the job as I went - sink or swim.

I now write for ChompTalk, specializing in live coverage for the Florida Gators gymnastics team and continuing to pursue the passion for athletic communications this thread has led me to.

  • JACK-OF-ALL-TRADES

As an adult, writing is part of my everyday life, as communication is a key element of the daytime jobs I’ve held over the years in the service industry.

I’ve also started my own podcasts, taking on every role from writing and hosting to marketing and graphic design. My jack-of-all-trades approach has allowed me to oversee these projects from concept to launch and beyond, taking ownership of the process and every step of its success.

  • Professional

In 2022, I joined Kinsale Insurance as the Content Marketing Specialist, part of a team of three doing all the marketing for a company underwriting $1B in premium. I wear many different hats, doing something different every day, which is exactly where I thrive.

In this position, I create written content for email marketing, social media, web, video, press releases, direct mail campaigns, and trade show collateral. I partner closely with our Graphic Design Specialist to create all these and more to weave the brand story at Kinsale, encouraging insurance brokers to seek us out over competitors.
